YY9: One Joker Cannot Fill Two Missing Places in a Rummy Run

There is a joker, so surely the gap is covered?

Only if you have counted the gap correctly. YY9 readers can test this with two small groups. Use one printed joker in each example and treat every numbered card as a natural card.

First group: name the missing place

5♥, printed Joker, 7♥

Read the intended ranks in order: five, six, seven. The natural five and seven are present. The joker occupies the one missing place, the six of hearts. That gives an impure sequence under the usual substitution rule described in A23's guide to sets and sequences.

The joker has done one identifiable job. You can point to the place it fills.

Second group: count before replacing

5♥, printed Joker, 8♥

To connect five and eight in one consecutive heart run, the ranks would be five, six, seven, eight. Both six and seven are missing. One physical joker cannot occupy both places.

If you call it six, seven is still absent. If you call it seven, six is still absent. Changing the name of the substitute does not create a fourth card.

As the three cards shown, this group is not a sequence. That is a judgement on this group, not on any unshown cards elsewhere in a hand.

Ask Maa to make the remaining gap visible

Saraswati Maa is approached for discernment. Here the request is not merely to recognise that help exists, but to understand how far that help reaches.

Bring the still-missing place to mind at Saraswati Maa's offering area. Offer the displayed white flowers, books, fruits, kheer and deepak together, seeking knowledge that can account for every place in the run rather than stopping at the sight of a joker.

ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः

Maa, accept my offering. Let me see the place a substitute has filled and the place that remains empty. Grant me clear understanding, so that the presence of one helpful card does not hide another missing condition.

Try explaining both groups without the phrase “a joker can be anything”. In the first, say, “This joker is the six of hearts.” In the second, say which rank it is replacing, then name the rank still missing.

That explanation makes the limit visible. A substitute is useful because it can take a place; it does not turn one place into two. Once the distinction is clear, the two groups no longer look like the same problem.
