YY GAME: Why the First Player to Knock May Still Lose at Gin Rummy

“I knocked first. How did the other player win?”

For YY GAME readers, the answer depends on what knocking means in Gin Rummy. It can bring the hand to its closing comparison without deciding that comparison in your favour.

The Bicycle rules for Gin Rummy allow a knock with no more than ten points of unmatched cards. An opponent who finishes with equal or lower deadwood can undercut the knocker. This is the ten-card game described by that source.

There are two runs, one set and a single unmatched seven. The deadwood is seven points, so the hand meets the stated knocking limit after the discard. That answers “May this player knock?”

It has not yet answered “Who has the better final deadwood count?”

The five of spades does not attach to any of the knocker's exposed runs or set. After the permitted laying-off stage, the opponent therefore still has five points. Five is lower than seven: the opponent undercuts.

What was mistaken in “first means winner”?

The player attached a result to an action that did not promise it. Knocking initiated the ending procedure. The comparison still had to occur.

For a YY GAME reader, keeping those answers separate preserves the whole explanation. The knock was permitted, and the undercut was still the correct result. One answer does not cancel the other.
