S333: Must, May and a Useful Suggestion—Three Different Kinds of Rummy Instruction

“It says to make a pure sequence first, so any other order must be invalid.” A useful learning suggestion has quietly become an extra rule. Elsewhere, “at least one pure sequence is required” is treated as if it were only a preference.

For S333 readers, the words around an instruction deserve as much attention as the cards. Saraswati Maa's blessing of language and understanding is a fitting wish when “must”, “may” and “try” are being read as though they all mean the same thing.

A requirement decides whether a declaration qualifies

Taj Rummy's rules require two sequences, including at least one pure sequence, for a valid show. That condition must be satisfied in the completed arrangement. A player cannot replace it with a preference for making attractive sets.

The requirement concerns what the declaration contains. It does not, by itself, specify the order in which every group had to be assembled during play.

Permission opens an option without demanding it

The same rules say the second required sequence can be pure or impure. Having a pure second sequence is therefore permitted. It is not necessary to turn that second group into an impure sequence simply because an example shows one.

“Can” matters here. It leaves more than one acceptable form, while the surrounding requirement still asks for the necessary sequences and valid arrangement of the whole hand.

Advice guides an approach
