RajWin: “Shall We Draw?” Is an Offer, Not Yet a Result

Follow two possible replies to the same chess draw offer. Ask Saraswati Maa for clear speech and careful listening before treating a proposal as an agreement.

“Shall we call it a draw?”

One player starts gathering the pieces. The other says, “Wait—I haven't answered.”

This short exchange gives RajWin readers a useful distinction. Proposing a result expresses what one player wants. Agreement requires a response from the other player too.

Replay the offer, leaving the pieces in place

Consider a teaching game in which both players have made several moves and draw agreements are allowed. The player makes a move, offers a draw and then presses the clock. These steps follow the procedure in FIDE Article 9.1.2.1.

The board stays as it is while the opponent considers the offer. Silence has not supplied the missing acceptance.

Now follow two different continuations.

In the first, the opponent says, “Yes, I accept the draw.” Under FIDE Article 5.2.3, that agreement ends the game immediately. The players then record the result that has already been settled.

In the second, the opponent says, “No, let's continue.” The offer has been refused. The game carries on from the existing position.

The original sentence is identical in both branches. What changes is the opponent's reply. Moving directly from your own offer to packing up skips that decisive fact.

A prayer with room for the other voice

Saraswati Maa is approached for clear expression and understanding. In this moment, clarity includes hearing an answer that may not be the one you hoped for.

Carry that wish to Saraswati Maa's offering area on Ishta Mel. Offer the whole displayed group of white flowers, books, fruits, kheer and deepak, remembering the moment when you must stop speaking and allow an answer to arrive.

ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः

Maa, accept my offering. Let me speak my proposal clearly and leave room for the other person's reply. Give me understanding to distinguish what I have asked from what we have actually agreed.

You can use a plain follow-up if the reply is unclear: “Are you accepting the draw, or would you like to continue?” Wait for the answer before treating the agreement as settled.

This example concerns an agreed draw. Other chess endings arise from the board or other rules, and do not depend on this conversation. Here, however, the conversation is the missing part of the result.
