Max Rummy: Asking Vighnaharta to Open the First Way Through a Hand

Thirteen cards seem to have no starting point. Follow the first clear sequence through the remaining hand while seeking Ganesha's blessing as Vighnaharta.

“Bappa, I cannot see where to begin.”

That is a complete reason to come before Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. For a Max Rummy reader looking at a muddled hand, the obstruction may be very close at hand: the cards are present, but no first group has become clear enough to build around.

At Ganesha's offering area on Ishta Mel, that blocked beginning can be named before anything is rearranged. The devotee asks Bappa to open a way through the difficulty and grant the wisdom to recognise it.

Begin with what is already in front of you

Here is a thirteen-card study, in the order in which the cards are being viewed:

9♦, 3♣, K♠, 5♣, 10♦, K♥, 4♣, Q♦, K♣, J♦, 7♥, 8♥, 9♥.

Use every card naturally, without jokers. The ranks and suits are mixed together, and moving all thirteen at once can make it hard to remember which connection you were following.

Now notice 3♣ and 4♣. Find 5♣. Place those three together: 3♣–4♣–5♣.

A first reliable group has appeared. The cards did not need to change for it to be there. You have identified three consecutive cards of the same suit, the basis of a pure sequence in A23's explanation of rummy sequences.

For someone praying to Vighnaharta, this is the kind of opening their request has named: a place to start where the hand had seemed closed to them.

Ganesha's blessing is sought for both the opening and the understanding that follows. He is honoured as a remover of obstacles and a giver of wisdom in the Ganesh Chaturthi tradition. A devotee can ask him to clear the obstruction without losing sight of the guidance still needed beyond it.

At his seat on Ishta Mel, modak, durva, a red flower, coconut and a deepak form the displayed offering group. Offer naivedya with the blocked beginning in mind. The first sequence gives a simple focus to the personal prayer:

Vighnaharta, please open a way through what I cannot yet understand. Grant me the wisdom to recognise a sound beginning and to follow it with care. Bappa, accept this offering and guide me onwards.

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.

Let the first opening reveal what remains

Keep 3♣–4♣–5♣ together. Ten cards remain. Look through those ten rather than returning the first group to the confusion.

The diamonds can now be placed as 9♦–10♦–J♦–Q♦. The three kings are K♠–K♥–K♣. The hearts are 7♥–8♥–9♥.

Together with the club sequence, that gives groups of three, four, three and three cards: all thirteen accounted for, with three pure sequences and one set. The opening hand contained this arrangement all along. Finding the first sequence reduced the unsettled part enough for the other groups to become easier to follow.

The example therefore has a definite end. You can point to the first three cards that opened the arrangement and then show where every remaining card went.

The prayer to Bappa can stay just as definite. At first it was, “I cannot see where to begin.” Once the arrangement is understood, the devotee can acknowledge the guidance they sought: “Bappa, keep granting me the wisdom to recognise the way before me.”

Next time a hand seems closed to you, you can bring that difficulty before Vighnaharta again. Ask for a way to become visible, and for his wisdom to guide you as you follow it. The first group in this study gives you a clear memory of what such an opening can look like.

Ganpati Bappa Morya. May his wisdom accompany the next step once the first way has opened.
