King777: Why En Passant Cannot Wait Until Your Next Turn
See exactly where an en passant capture lands, which pawn leaves the board, and why the right disappears after another move.
Two chess positions can look identical around the pawns and still allow different moves. For en passant, the previous move matters.
Set up this King777 teaching exercise with White's king on g1 and pawn on e5; Black's king on g8 and pawn on d7. All other squares are empty, and Black is to move. Black advances the pawn two squares, from d7 to d5.
White now has a special capture available. White may choose another legal move, but cannot keep this capture for a later turn.

The white pawn lands on d6, not d5
Move White's pawn diagonally from e5 to d6. Remove the black pawn from d5. Those are the two changes made by the capture.
The landing square was empty. That is why the move can look strange when you first see it. The black pawn has just passed through d6 on its two-square move; en passant allows White to capture it as though it had advanced only to d6.
Do not place the white pawn on d5. A pawn on e5 does not capture sideways. And do not leave the black pawn on d5 after moving White to d6: this is a capture, not an ordinary move to an empty diagonal square.
The rule is stated in FIDE Articles 3.7.3.1 and 3.7.3.2. It concerns an adjacent pawn that has just made its initial two-square advance, and the opportunity lasts only for the immediately following move.

Leave the pawns alone and the right still expires
Now rewind to the moment after Black's d7–d5. This time White moves the king from g1 to h1 instead. Black moves the king from g8 to h8.
The pawns are still on e5 and d5. But White can no longer play e5–d6 en passant. White used the available turn for a different move. The right cannot be saved for later, even though neither pawn moved in between.
At Saraswati Maa's offering area, offer the complete group of white flowers, books, fruits, kheer and a deepak. If the unchanged pawns have left you puzzled, place that doubt before Maa. Seek her blessing to remember the order of the moves as clearly as the squares themselves:
Maa, help me understand not only where the pieces stand, but when a rule applies. Let yesterday's lesson become clear knowledge in my hands today. Please accept this offering and guide my learning.
ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः

Three questions before making the capture
First, did the opposing pawn advance two squares on the immediately preceding move? If it arrived on d5 by moving from d6, this special capture did not arise.
Second, is your pawn in the required adjacent position? Our white pawn is on e5, next to the newly arrived black pawn on d5.
Third, would the capture leave your own king safe? En passant does not override the rule against leaving your king in check. Here, after the capture, Black has only a king on g8; it does not attack White's king on g1. There is no rook or bishop whose line the pawn move could uncover.

Try explaining the difference between the two records without pointing at the board. In the first, Black's last move was d7–d5 and White has not replied. In the second, White and Black have already made king moves. The positions of the two pawns are unchanged, but the move history is different.
When a friend asks, “Why could you capture it just now but not now?”, show that missing turn in the record. The answer lies between the pictures.
