Two friends are helping each other with a chess movement exercise. Both want the same finish, but one has begun to treat the first plan as the promise itself. A new look at the board shows why that plan needs to change.

Keep the destination visible

The exercise asks for a route that takes a knight from a1 to d4 in two knight moves. Your first idea is a1–b3–d4. Each step has the knight's correct movement pattern.

Then your partner points out a white pawn already on b3. The knight is also white. It cannot land on a square occupied by its own pawn. That restriction, along with the knight's movement, is covered in the FIDE Laws of Chess.

There is another route: a1–c2–d4, with c2 and d4 empty in this exercise. It reaches the same destination in the same number of knight moves. The square b3 can remain occupied without obstructing these two landings.

You have three things to hold apart: the agreed destination d4, the first route through b3 and the board condition that rules out that route. Changing the second item preserves the first.
