IV7: A Pawn Moves Forward—So Why Does It Capture Diagonally?

Use one white pawn to distinguish an ordinary advance from a capture. Bring a precise learning question to Saraswati Maa and her offering area on Ishta Mel.

“Pawns go forward” is a useful beginning, but it does not tell a learner what to do with a piece directly ahead or an opponent on the diagonal.

For IV7 readers learning through board games, this is a small question with a clear answer: an ordinary pawn advance and an ordinary pawn capture use different conditions. Saraswati Maa's blessing can be sought for the understanding that keeps those conditions distinct.

Keep the pawn still while changing the question

Use a teaching board with White's king on a1, White's pawn on e4 and Black's king on h8. All other squares are empty. It is White's turn.

The square immediately ahead of the pawn is e5. Because it is empty, e4–e5 is a legal advance. The diagonals d5 and f5 are empty too, but that does not let the pawn move to either of them as an ordinary capture.

Under FIDE's pawn rules, Articles 3.7.1 and 3.7.3, an ordinary advance uses the clear square ahead; an ordinary capture takes an opponent diagonally ahead.

Now place a black knight on e5. The pawn's forward square is occupied. It cannot capture that knight by moving straight ahead, and it cannot pass through it.

Reset the exercise with the black knight on d5 rather than e5. The pawn now has two legal choices in this teaching position: advance to the empty e5, or capture the knight on d5. Both moves travel towards White's eighth rank, but they perform different actions.

Ask for the distinction you actually need

“Teach me how this pawn moves” can become a more exact prayer: “Maa, help me understand when I am advancing and when I am capturing.”

At Saraswati Maa's offering area, offer the displayed white flowers, books, fruits, kheer and deepak as one group. The books belong naturally with this unfinished piece of learning; the offering is addressed to the goddess from whom you seek knowledge.

ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः

Saraswati Maa, accept my offering. Bless me with understanding that goes beyond a half-remembered sentence. Let me notice the action, the occupied square and the condition that makes the move possible.

Explain it back without moving the board

Point to e5 and say what must be true for the ordinary advance. Point to d5 and say what must be there for the ordinary capture. The board has stayed in the same orientation throughout; the difference lies in the action being considered.

This exercise covers ordinary pawn movement and capture. The first-move double advance, promotion and en passant have their own conditions. An IV7 reader can learn those separately after this simpler distinction is clear.
