Ind Bingo: One Completed Line Is Not the Same as a Completed Card

Read the same marked teaching card against two declared targets. Seek Saraswati Maa's blessing to understand what completion means in the game being played.

“There are plenty of marks. Surely this is finished?”

Before counting how much of the card looks filled, ask what the game requires you to complete. Ind Bingo readers can test the question on a small three-by-three teaching card, then bring the wish for clear understanding to Saraswati Maa.

Keep the card unchanged

In this illustration, ✓ means the number has been called and marked. A dash means it has not:

  • Top row: 8 ✓, 21 ✓, 34 ✓
  • Middle row: 12 ✓, 25 ✓, 40 —
  • Bottom row: 17 —, 31 —, 48 —

Five of the nine positions are marked. There is no free centre square in this exercise. We will use exactly this marked card for two separately stated targets.

Target one: complete the top horizontal row

The required positions contain 8, 21 and 34. All three are marked, so this target is complete.

The marked 12 and 25 elsewhere do not change that conclusion. Nor do the four unmarked positions prevent completion of the specifically chosen top row.

Target two: complete all nine positions

Now use a different target while keeping the same marks. Completion requires every position on this teaching card. The unmarked 40, 17, 31 and 48 mean that target is not complete.

The first judgement and the second judgement are both correct because they answer different requirements.

A number of marks cannot replace the target

“Five marked” describes the card. “Complete” describes the relationship between the card and a declared target. You need both the record and the requirement to reach that second conclusion.

This is a concrete request for Saraswati Maa's discernment: may you see what is being asked before deciding that enough has been done.

The books at Saraswati Maa's offering area on Ishta Mel fit this wish to read a condition accurately. They are displayed with white flowers, fruits, kheer and deepak; offer the whole group after darshan, remembering the difference between the two targets.

ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः

Saraswati Maa, accept my offering. Bless me with understanding of the goal I have agreed to follow. Let the sight of many completed parts leave me attentive to the actual requirement, and help me explain what is complete and what remains.

Say the target when you say the result

“The top row is complete” is accurate here. “The whole card is complete” is not. Naming the target keeps the conclusion clear for everyone reading the same marks.

For the Ind Bingo reader, the blessing sought is understanding tied to the real task. Before the next game, know which completion pattern has been chosen; during the game, judge the card against that pattern.
