Gold Rummy: Which Cards Can You Lay Off After a Gin Rummy Knock?

Work through two complete Gin Rummy hands after an ordinary knock. See where 4♥ and 8♥ can go, why 9♣ cannot follow, and what changes when the knocker goes Gin.

Your opponent lays down 5♥ 6♥ 7♥. You have 4♥ and 8♥ among your unmatched cards. Can you add both? And if you can, does the 9♣ beside them go too?

This Gold Rummy learning example uses Gin Rummy, with ten cards in each final hand after the knocker's discard. The question arises during the reveal after an ordinary knock. It is the opponent of the player who knocked who gets the layoff opportunity described here.

Put both hands on the table

The player who knocked reveals:

5♥ 6♥ 7♥ — a run of hearts.
K♠ K♥ K♦ — a set of kings.
2♣ 3♣ 4♣ — a run of clubs.
A♦ — one unmatched card, worth one point.

There are nine cards in melds and one unmatched card. This is an ordinary knock with one point of deadwood, not Gin. “Deadwood” means the cards left outside valid melds.

Your own ten cards are:

2♠ 3♠ 4♠ — your run of spades.
Q♣ Q♦ Q♥ — your set of queens.
4♥ 8♥ 9♣ J♦ — four unmatched cards.

Keep your two melds together. The layoff question concerns the four remaining cards and the melds the knocker has already shown.

Add to an existing meld, one card at a time

Put your 4♥ before the knocker's 5♥ 6♥ 7♥. It extends that run downwards. Put your 8♥ after the 7♥. It extends the same run upwards. The resulting line is 4♥ 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ 8♥.

Now try 9♣. Its number follows eight, but its suit is clubs. It cannot extend a heart run. It cannot join the kings either, and it is not next to either end of 2♣ 3♣ 4♣. So 9♣ stays in your deadwood.

J♦ also has no place in those three melds. Your four unmatched cards were worth 4 + 8 + 9 + 10 = 31 points. After laying off the two hearts, the remaining deadwood is 9 + 10 = 19. These are card points in the exercise.

MobilityWare's official layoff explanation describes adding unmatched cards to an opponent's existing melds after a knock, subject to the Gin exceptions. A layoff extends a meld; it does not create a new one from unrelated loose cards on the table.

If the opponent goes Gin, pause before touching the cards

Change the knocker's A♦ to 8♣. Their clubs can now be grouped as 2♣ 3♣ 4♣, but 8♣ remains unmatched, so this change alone does not produce Gin. A useful card has to fit, not merely replace an ace.

Instead, replace the original A♦ with A♣. The knocker now has A♣ 2♣ 3♣ 4♣ alongside the heart run and kings: all ten cards are in melds. If they end the hand by going Gin, you cannot lay off your 4♥ or 8♥ under the cited rules. The cards would fit the heart run, but the layoff opportunity is unavailable. MobilityWare also excludes Big Gin from layoffs.

For the ordinary-knock example, write a short settlement note: “4♥ and 8♥ added to the heart run; 9♣ and J♦ remain; deadwood 19.” Beside the Gin version, write “No layoff.” Those two notes record why the same two hearts can receive different treatment without changing their rank or suit.
