EZ777: When a Game Is Interrupted, Who Agrees to Resume It?

Record an interrupted teaching game without deciding its future alone. Keep the saved position separate from an agreement to resume, with a prayer to Mahadev.

The pieces are still on the board, but one friend has to leave. “I was ahead, so we can say I won,” someone suggests.

An EZ777 reader may recognise the urge to give an interrupted evening a tidy ending. Yet a lead, an interruption and an agreed result are three different facts. They need not arrive together.

Imagine a simple teaching race along a numbered track, with the finish agreed at 30. At the interruption, A's counter is on 24 and B's is on 20. A is ahead. Neither counter has reached the finish.

The friends agreed where the finish was, but made no agreement that an interrupted game goes to the leading counter. They have not yet agreed to resume, restart or leave the game unfinished.

“A was ahead when we stopped” describes the available facts. “A won” adds a result that has not been established.

Save the state before inventing the ending

For this exercise, a useful note would read: “Finish: 30. A: 24. B: 20. Paused before B's next turn. Continuation not yet agreed.”

The last sentence matters as much as the numbers. It prevents a later reader from mistaking the saved position for a completed result.

Saving the counters preserves information; it does not mean both friends have agreed to resume. Nor does it authorise the leading player to settle the game alone. When they next speak, two questions remain: “Do we both want to continue this game?” and, if so, “Do we agree this is the position and turn to resume from?”

This is a friends' teaching arrangement. If a game service has its own interruption procedure, that actual procedure would need to be checked separately; the practice note does not supply it.

The unfinished part can also be offered

Mahadev, accept my offering. This game and the conversation about it remain unfinished. Give me stillness to leave the unknown part open, clarity to preserve what did happen and patience to speak with my friend when we can decide the next step together.

The prayer does not need a completed result before it can be sincere. You are asking Shiva's grace for the unsettled moment itself.

Later, both friends might agree to continue from the saved counters, or to begin another exercise. Until that conversation occurs, the record can remain exactly as it is. A's lead has been recognised. The interruption has been recorded. The outcome is still open.
