Dream1: When the Chessboard Turns, Which Way Is a Pawn's Forward?

Read the same pawn movement from two board orientations. Ask Saraswati Maa for the discernment to separate a changing view from a fixed rule.

Turn a chess diagram around and a familiar move can suddenly look backwards. If “forward” has come to mean “up the screen”, the picture has quietly taken the place of the rule.

View one: White's side is nearest

Keep a white pawn on e2 and a black pawn on d7. The study is about direction; assume the squares directly ahead are empty. Reading from the top of the displayed board downwards gives these two file strips:

The white pawn's one-square advance is e2 to e3, upwards in this view. The black pawn's is d7 to d6, downwards. Both are moving forward for their own colour.

View two: Black's side is nearest

Rotate the view through half a turn. The same file strips, again read from displayed top to bottom, now appear in the opposite order:

Now e2 to e3 looks downward, while d7 to d6 looks upward. Neither pawn has changed colour or starting square. No move has been made merely by turning the picture.

FIDE's Laws of Chess, article 3.7, define a pawn's forward move on its file, with the destination unoccupied. A screen's upper edge is not the rule's reference point.
