DiwaX: Does the Third Repeated Chess Position End the Game?
Count a legal knight-return example from the starting position. Learn when threefold repetition allows a draw claim and when fivefold repetition ends play.
“We are back here again. Is that a draw?” Before putting the pieces away, check whether you mean that a draw can be claimed or that the game has already ended. Under FIDE rules, the third and fifth appearances of a position do different jobs.
For this DiwaX chess exercise, use the normal starting position with all thirty-two pieces. Only the two kingside knights will move. Keep a record beside the board; the first position counts before either player makes a move.

A return to the starting position counts as appearance two
Play these four moves, one piece move at a time:
1. White's knight goes from g1 to f3.
2. Black's knight goes from g8 to f6.
3. White's knight returns from f3 to g1.
4. Black's knight returns from f6 to g8.
The usual notation is 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. Ng1 Ng8. Every other piece has stayed on its starting square. White is to move again. This is the starting position's second appearance, not its first repetition counted as a fresh beginning.
Repeat the same four moves once more. After Black's fourth move, 4...Ng8, the starting position appears for the third time, with White to move. The opening position, the first return and the second return are the three occurrences.

At the third appearance, White can make a claim
FIDE Article 9.2 allows the player to move to make a correct threefold-repetition claim. In our position after 4...Ng8, that player is White. In an over-the-board event, seek the arbiter before touching a piece to move it; the claim procedure includes pausing the clock. A correct claim ends the game as a draw.
There is also a procedure for claiming before a move that will produce the third occurrence. Here we use the simpler case where the position has already appeared. Do not move first and then assume the same opportunity to claim remains on that turn.
If neither player makes a successful claim and play continues, repeat our knight circuit twice more. After 6...Ng8 the starting position appears for the fourth time. After 8...Ng8 it appears for the fifth time. Article 9.6.1 makes that a draw without requiring a player's claim.

Count positions, including whose turn it is
In this example the same pieces return, the same player has the move, and the available moves and castling rights remain unchanged. No pawn has moved, so there is no en passant opportunity to distinguish one occurrence from another.
A similar-looking board alone is not enough. If the side to move or the relevant move rights differ, you may be looking at a different position. The occurrences need not be consecutive, and repeating a move three times is not itself the test.
For an online game, check how its own rules handle repetition and draw claims. Some services handle the claim automatically. A result appearing on a screen therefore does not, by itself, explain the over-the-board procedure used in this lesson.
At Saraswati Maa's offering area on Ishta Mel, bring the doubt that started the exercise: “Is the result already settled, or is there a step I must take?” Offer the white flowers and books together with the fruits, kheer and deepak shown there.
Maa Saraswati, accept my offering. Grant me the understanding to recognise when a rule applies and what it asks me to do. Let me read the position patiently and speak clearly when I need to make a claim.
ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः

Return to your record and circle the starting position, 2...Ng8 and 4...Ng8. Then underline 8...Ng8. The circles show why White can claim at the third occurrence; the underline marks the fifth occurrence that ends the game if play has continued that far.
