DiwaX: Ask Bappa to Remove the Rule You Added Yourself

Thirteen cards will not divide entirely into groups of three. A rummy study connects Ganesha's gift of wisdom with recognising a self-imposed obstacle.

“Bappa, why does one card always remain?”

You make a group of three. Then another. By the time four groups are laid out, one of the thirteen cards is still outside. You try again, convinced that the hand needs better rearranging.

The first thing to bring before Ganesha may be the condition you have silently imposed: every group must have exactly three cards. If that condition is wrong, repeating the arrangement will keep producing the same obstacle.

For a DiwaX reader seeking the blessing of Vighnaharta, the prayer becomes unusually precise: “Grant me the wisdom to see whether I have made this barrier myself.”

The extra condition hiding in the question

Thirteen cannot be divided into groups that all contain three cards. Four such groups use twelve. The leftover card is inevitable under that condition, however carefully you move the cards.

But a sequence need not stop at three. The rummy explanation from A23 permits consecutive same-suit sequences of three or more cards. A natural set may also contain four equal-rank cards of different suits.

So the question “How do I arrange every card into threes?” has asked you to meet a restriction the game does not impose. You can carry it around for a long time because it sounds almost like the rule you remember.

The obstacle is real in your attempts, but its source is the added word “exactly.”

Lay out this complete hand, using all cards naturally and no jokers:

  • 2♠, 3♠, 4♠
  • 6♥, 7♥, 8♥
  • Q♥, Q♠, Q♦
  • 9♣, 10♣, J♣, Q♣

The first two groups are pure sequences. The queens form a set of three different suits, and the last group is a four-card pure sequence. All thirteen cards have a place in a valid arrangement: three, three, three and four.

The four-card club run is 9♣–10♣–J♣–Q♣. If you insisted on leaving Q♣ outside simply to keep the run at three, you would be creating the leftover yourself. Keeping it in the run solves the invented size restriction while respecting the real sequence condition.

Vighnaharta's wisdom reaches the mistaken premise

Ganesha is honoured for removing obstacles and bestowing wisdom. His association with beginnings and understanding appears in the Ganesh Chaturthi account from Incredible India. The devotee can ask him to reveal an obstruction within their own understanding as well as one they first imagined to be outside it.

At his Ishta Mel seat, bring that particular admission: “I thought every group had to be three.” The modak, durva, red flower, coconut and deepak are displayed as a whole offering group. Offer naivedya there, with the familiar mantra:

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.

Bappa, please accept my offering. Remove the obstacle created by my mistaken understanding. Grant me the wisdom to recognise the real rule and the openness to let go of the restriction I added.

The new arrangement is not a special exception granted to this hand. A four-card same-suit run was allowed all along. The relief comes from discovering that the task you were struggling with was narrower than the task you actually needed to complete.

Return to the original prayer: “Why does one card always remain?” Now you can answer it without blaming the cards. You had been requiring thirteen to fit into all-threes groups.

“Bappa, help me recognise such barriers sooner.” For a DiwaX reader devoted to Ganesha, that is a wish for his wisdom to remain at work beyond this one example. Ganpati Bappa Morya.
