Diwa Lucky: Two Symbols on a Spinner Do Not Mean Equal Chances

Six flowers and two stars: count equal spinner sections before comparing chances. Offer to Lakshmi Maa on Ishta Mel with a prayer for auspicious beginnings.

There are only two pictures on the spinner: a flower and a star. Does that give each picture half the chance?

Look once more before answering. In our paper example, the circle has eight equal sections. Six carry a flower and two carry a star. The pictures have two names, but they do not occupy the same number of sections.

Before a friendly spinner game, you may visit Lakshmi Maa’s offering area on Ishta Mel. Take darshan and offer the displayed Lotus, Coins, Mithai, Coconut and Deepak together. Ask Maa for an auspicious beginning and welcome her blessing into the time you share.

ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः

Maa Lakshmi, please accept my offering. Bless this gathering with happiness and good fortune. Let us welcome a good moment with gratitude and enjoy one another’s company.

Count the places where the pointer can stop

Label the eight equal sections 1 to 8. Put flowers in sections 1–6 and stars in 7–8. We are assuming an ideal pointer that is equally likely to stop in each section; a pointer resting exactly on a boundary is spun again.

Six of the eight outcomes show a flower: 6/8, or three quarters. Two show a star: 2/8, or one quarter. Counting the two kinds of picture instead would hide the repeated labels.

Try a second drawing. Keep eight equal sections, but put flowers in four and stars in four. Now each picture has half the chance. The names of the pictures have not changed. Their shares of the circle have.

These are calculations for our paper spinner, assuming every section is equally likely. To interpret a digital spinner, you would need its stated rules or probabilities; its artwork alone is not enough.

The useful question is specific: “What are the equally likely outcomes, and how many carry the result I am counting?” If the first part is unknown, a neat-looking fraction cannot fill that gap.

Does one quarter mean one star every four turns?

No. One quarter describes the chance on a turn under our assumptions; it is not a schedule for the next four results. You might see no star in four turns, or more than one.

For example, flower–flower–flower–flower is possible. If each spin is independent, that particular four-spin result has probability (3/4) × (3/4) × (3/4) × (3/4) = 81/256, about 31.6%. Four flowers do not mean that the next turn owes you a star.

If the star is the result you hoped for, enjoy it when it arrives. You can remember Maa with gratitude without treating the number of turns as a measure of her favour.

Change the picture, then explain the result

Draw a third circle with three flowers and five stars. Before spinning anything, write the two fractions. Then explain why neither is one half even though the circle still contains only two kinds of picture.

The answers are 3/8 and 5/8. What changed was the count of equal sections carrying each label. No sequence of earlier spins was needed to reach those figures.

Keep the three drawings side by side: six flowers and two stars; four and four; three and five. Before your friend spins, ask them to point to every section carrying a star. Counting those sections explains the difference more clearly than counting the two picture names.
