365in: Say “I Adjust” Before Straightening a Chess Piece

In an over-the-board lesson, adjusting a piece and making a move can begin with the same touch. Learn why the words must come first, with Saraswati Maa's blessing.

The knight is standing half outside its square. You reach out to centre it, then say, “I was only adjusting.” Your friend has already understood the touch as the start of a move.

This teaching situation gives 365in readers a question about expression as well as chess. When an action can be understood in two ways, the timing of the explanation matters.

Put the words in front of the hand

FIDE Article 4.2.1 permits the player whose turn it is to adjust pieces after first announcing that intention. “I adjust” is a straightforward way to do so.

Compare two sequences in an over-the-board lesson. In the first, it is your turn; you say “I adjust”, centre the knight on its own square and withdraw your hand. In the second, it is your turn; you deliberately take hold of a movable knight to play, then change your mind.

The first describes an announced adjustment. In the second, Article 4.3.1 requires you to move that knight if it has a legal move.

Article 4.2.2 also covers the opening situation: apart from clearly accidental contact, touching a piece outside the announced adjustment is treated as intentional. Even if you meant to straighten your own knight, saying so afterwards does not replace the prior announcement. If that knight can legally move, the touch-move requirement applies.

What if the touch is disputed?

Keep the actual sequence intact. Say whose turn it was, what was said before contact, whether the contact was clearly accidental, and what happened to the piece. In an organised event, the arbiter can deal with those facts and the applicable rules.

These are physical-board procedures. They do not describe how a particular app interprets a tap or a dragged piece. For the teaching exercise, use the board and the spoken announcement so the distinction remains visible.

Ask Maa for words that arrive when they are needed

Saraswati Maa is approached for knowledge and clear speech. Here those gifts meet at one small moment: saying what you intend before your hand makes the intention ambiguous to someone else.

Take darshan at her Ishta Mel offering area and offer the displayed white flowers, books, fruits, kheer and deepak together.

ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः

Maa, accept my offering. Give me the understanding to know which action I am taking and the clear words to say it in time. Let my explanation help the other person follow what I actually mean.

Practise the order once

Wait for your turn. Say “I adjust”. Straighten the piece within its square. Release it. You can now consider your move separately.

For a 365in reader, the lesson is more exact than “communicate better”. The words perform their useful work before the touch. Maa's blessing is sought for that alignment of understanding, speech and action.
